The English Premier League was originally known as the English Football League First Division. As the home of the sport, England had always had a proud footballing tradition. In the late 1980s, that tradition was under assault. Hooliganism was rife, as thugs in football shirts were more interested in fighting than football. Stadiums were falling apart and ticket sales were in the tank. The best players in the world headed to Italy, Spain and Germany to ply their trades.

All the top football clubs in England decided to make a bold move to combat this, and so in May of 1992 the English Premier League was founded. 22 clubs joined the league, and it quickly became a destination for top talent. The experiment was a success, leading to huge television contracts and a lot of success in European championships for English Premier League squads.

The history of the English Premier League has been dominated by Manchester United. Led by Sir Alex Ferguson, the boys in red won the first two Premier League championships. They have won 12 of the 19 championships, and are the favorites to win another this year. If they do so, they may gain another victory for Sir Alex as Best Football Manager 2012.

Premier League tickets always give the fans their money’s worth. The top teams like Chelsea, Arsenal Liverpool and, of course, Manchester United always put on a good show at home, win, lose or draw. However, the dominance of these so-called “Top Four,” has led to some criticism that there is not enough competitiveness in the English Premier League. Luckily, the other Manchester team, Manchester City, is challenging for the championship this year.

The English Premier league is the most watched sporting competition in the world. Games are broadcast to a worldwide audience of over 600 million people, and that audience is growing with football games online.
